9 Rod Super Spread - Great Lakes Angler Magazine
After a 20-minute run through the pre-dawn darkness out of Saugatuck, Michigan, Capt. Dave Engel switches on the Raymarine autopilot and starts setting rods with Capt. Bill Bale. It doesn’t take long to get six Shimano Talora/Tekota rod and reel combos out with wire divers and copper on boards; classic Charter Special reels with Talora rigger rods are on three Vector downriggers. Within two minutes, Bale is handing a bent diver rod to a charter client; less than four hours later, they’ve landed a seven-man limit of 21 kings, plus two lakers and a fat coho and the 36-foot Tiara Best Chance Too heads back to port.

SAUGATUCK (WZZM)-- I headed out to Saugatuck Charters and hopped aboard the Best Chance Too, where Capt. Dave Engel and Capt. Bill Bale were very interested in my latest "Try It" product, the Easy2Hook no-knot fish hooks. I don't have much experience with fishing gear, so I was relying on these guys to help me put it to the test.

Best Chance Too takes 2nd in Huntington Waypoint Big Lake Classic!
Image
Best Chance Too wins 2nd in the 2009 Huntington Waypoint Big Lake Classic out of Saugatuck. In a one day, four hour shoot-out, (due to bad weather both Saturday and Sunday), Best Chance Too boated 8 fish to finish a strong second.  BCT also won 2nd in the 333 which moves them into 1st place in the 333 points championship for the season. With three tournaments remaining in the 333 (which the Best Chance Too team will not be competing in), it's anyone's guess how this will play out...keep your fingers crossed until September 4th!

Best Chance Too Wins 2009 South Haven Pro/Am!
Image

Best Chance Too takes first place in the South Haven Pro/Am with a whopping 297 lbs. in two days of fishing.  After experiencing the largest catches since the 12 fish limit was implemented from the traditional fifteen fish limit, Best Chance Too rises to the top once again.  Untypical spring fishing has made it very difficult to win, when literally all the boats are limiting out in all of the tournaments. "It's like playing Russian Roulette to stay away from the small fish", Capt. Dave Engel has quoted to local sports writers.  But the good news is there is lots of bait, and the fish are much larger and much healthier than they have been in many years.

Best Chance Too also wins first place in the Offshore Tackle Challenge. "Maybe it's the new uniforms?"

Second Place in Manistee for Best Chance Too!
Image
Best Chance Too continues it's streak of finishing in the top five, with a very close Second Place finish in the 2009 Manistee Salmon Splash. Fishing was very tough, and out of 77 boats, Best Chance Too was once again one of only two boats to catch their limit both days.  To finish out their week of fishing in Manistee, Best Chance Too also took their third consecutive Second Place finish in the Big Boys Only tournament, getting narrowly edged out of first by only three points...by one of the last boats to weigh in.

Best Chance Too Wins Muskegon Salmon Shootout!
Image

Best Chance Too wins First Place in the Muskegon Salmon Shootout on July 7th and 8th in 2009.  With a 71 boat turnout, Best Chance Too was the only team to limit out on both days, even though this year the catch limit had been dropped to 10 fish from the previous year's 12 fish limit.  And on top of that, they were finished by 9:30 AM each day.

Fishing was very tough for the entire week before the Muskegon tournament, with most teams struggling to find the fish.  Being the only boat to catch their 10 fish each day gave Best Chance Too a 90 point lead over the 2nd place boat, as well as a huge advantage over the rest of the field.

Nice job, fellas!

Best Chance Too takes 2nd in Ludington!

For the second year in a row, Best Chance Too took Second Place in the Ludington Offshore Classic. With 133 boats competing, Best Chance Too was one of only two Pro Division boats to catch their limit both days. The Ludington Offshore Classic is the biggest tournament on Lake Michigan, drawing competitors from as far away as Michigan City, IN and Door County, WI.  Best Chance Too was pleased to place Second for the third time in this very competitive tournament.
